Get spreadsheet data into a format AI tools handle better

Spreadsheets are dense with things an AI tool doesn't need to see: formatting rules, formulas, multiple hidden sheets, on top of the actual numbers and labels you care about.

Accepts .xls, .xlsx · up to 10MB · outputs a Markdown (.md) file

Why a spreadsheet is trickier than it looks

An Excel file can hold far more than what is visible in the grid: conditional formatting, cell styles, chart definitions, calculation history. When you are asking an AI tool a question about the data itself, all of that is just noise standing between it and your numbers.

We read each worksheet and lay it out as a Markdown table: rows and columns, exactly as you would see them if you opened the file, just without everything else the format carries along with it. Every sheet in the workbook gets its own table, labeled with its sheet name.

What you will get back

  • One Markdown table per worksheet, using your first row as the header
  • Cell values shown as they would actually display, not raw formulas
  • A plain-text .md file, works on both older .xls files and newer .xlsx files
  • Reading text out of pictures in the workbook is a premium add-on on a dedicated instance (contact us to get set up); it is off on this free site

Common questions

Do formulas come through, or just the numbers?

Just the values, shown the way they would display when you open the file, not the underlying formula. If a cell shows 1,204.50, that is what you will see, not the calculation behind it.

What if my workbook has a lot of sheets?

Every sheet gets converted and included, each under its own heading with the sheet's name.

What format do I actually get back?

A plain text file in Markdown format, ending in .md, with each worksheet laid out as a simple table. It is readable on its own and pastes cleanly into an AI chat window or a document.

Is there a row limit?

Very large sheets are capped at 2,000 rows each to keep the output manageable. You will see a note in the output if a sheet gets cut off.
